About Our History
History of RLI Uganda
Uganda’s RLI activities tie into broader rotary growth in the country. Rotary presence in Uganda dates back to the 1940s-1980s with early club formations and expansions. As of 2025, Uganda’s RLI structure has supported regional expansion with collaboration on the new Greater Horn of Africa Division covering Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and South Sudan. The Greater Horn of Africa Division was certified after preparations involving RLI Uganda Teams.
RLI activities in Uganda operate primarily through Rotary Districts 9213 and 9214 which cover Uganda and neighboring countries like Tanzania. These fall under the RLI Africa-Eastern Africa-Lake Victoria Division chaired by Rtn Andrew Muguluma.
During the 2025-2026 training season, RLI has passed out 185 Undergraduates and 79 Graduate Class participants making a total of 264 participants. A training session was conducted in Mbarara bringing together all the clubs in Western Uganda. The program emphasizes leadership, strategic planning, club growth and public speaking.
Decentralization to upcountry areas. Over the years RLI encourages up country rotary clubs to organize regional trainings. RLI has had such sessions in Njeru, Jinja (Eastern Uganda clubs), Entebbe Road corridor and of recent in November and December 2025, Mbarara (Western Uganda clubs).
RLI Uganda remains an active, evolving grassroots effort focused on leadership development to strengthen clubs and service. It continues to decentralize while maintaining high participation in central locations.
